Chelsea is no newcomer to cameras. She has plenty of experience posing which made the photo shoot process easy for me. But before I began, I recalled a memory of a conversation I had with her. And it was in that moment that I saw a very soft and candid side of this otherwise fierce young woman. With that memory in mind, we decided that it is this soft and more free spirited underlying nature of hers that we wanted to embody in the photos. To me, fierce is not just having a strong presence. Being fierce is tasting any failure or fear, but savoring every moment in life with optimism and gratitude. In this interview, Chelsea shows that fierce is more than just how you look -it’s how you choose to think and use your mind.
School/Major: Entrepreneurship; Minors in Spanish & Marketing
Favorite Word: Love
The key to happiness is: Being happy and peaceful with yourself in this moment
My kryptonite is: Insecurity, when I’m insecure about something, I’m less inclined to try it
In three words, I would describe myself as: Driven, hopeful, growing
Success to me means: Climbing the ladder without using others as the rungs
Define curiosity: The constant pursuit of knowledge as a result of being dissatisfied with only knowing “what you know”
To be brilliant, is to be: Insightful, pensive, thoughtful of your knowledge, and relentlessly curious.
As an aspiring entrepreneur/businesswoman, who is one professional you admire?
Oprah. Her career has been very dynamic. Although she started as simply a TV host, I have watched how she has built a business empire while striving to be as generous as possible.
Where do you think fear comes from? How does it affect you & how do you deal with it?
I think fear is a concept we are taught by our family and friends (eventually). I think as children, we notice what causes trepidation in our loved ones and therefore, we begin to believe we too must be scared. Honestly, these things scare me the most: darkness, spiders, and the supernatural. The supernatural scares me the most, because no one truly knows what role it plays in our lives –and to what extent.
What do you think it means to be happy?
To be happy, I think it is essential to be peaceful –peaceful with where you are in life, with the understanding that there will always be struggles, but having faith in your ability to overcome them.
What does "awareness" mean to you? Do you think most people are living with awareness?
I think “awareness” can be described as being cognizant of what goes on around us outside of our immediate worlds. I think most people are not living in awareness. We live in a culture of selfishness, and this hinders our desire and ability to be truly aware.
What are two key characteristics that successful person embodies? What is your definition of success?
A truly successful person will be driven and thoughtful. Thoughtful so that they may be aware of the paths they can choose for their success and the consequences. Drive, so that they may pursue the chosen path tirelessly until their goals are fulfilled.
Love. What do you think is the key to healthy relationships between friends, families, couples, etc?
The world “love” is thrown around far too frivolously, especially in my generation. To me, the key(s) to healthy relationships are communication, trust, loyalty, caring, selflessness… all of which seem to be components of the “truest” love.
If you had one message or piece of advice to share, what would it be?
My advice would be to not be your own worst enemy. For a long time in my life I was my own worst enemy, and it did nothing to help me. In this world if you can’t love yourself, count on yourself, believe in yourself, then NO ONE else truly will. It’s a lesson I want to share with so many people, especially girls. But, it’s very difficult. I am still working towards this goal.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness."
Although we’re made to believe that money, fame, and (quite frankly) sex are the keys to a fulfilled life, I am consistently reminded by this quote that we can live for so much more. Whether it is a life dedicated to spiritual enlightenment or simply love by cultivating a beautiful family —we are meant to do more in our lives to fill them with meaning. So, do it.
How do you define the word "beautiful?" How can we inspire others to feel more beautiful?
Beautiful is hard to define. I would argue that beauty is anything that can make you smile or feel –like a baby’s laughter. Even an impending storm, frightening as it is, can be beautiful because of it’s effect. Anything that reminds us of how human we are is beautiful. That is why there is such a problem with this current world of photoshopping and plastic surgeries. We are becoming dolls, robots, puppets. That said, I think we can inspire people to feel more beautiful by encouraging them to find their own uniqueness and even look at what’s “ugly” about them, as something that connects them to their humanity. If we strip away all that is natural, we lose parts of our humanity.
